The New United States of America (NUSA) is the successor state to the United States, proclaimed in 2077 after the old federal union collapsed into the uprisings, secessions, and interstate civil war of the mid-21st century. It is a reduced continental republic of the states that accepted the 2077 federal compact, not a restoration of the pre-collapse United States: several states remained outside it, and it never regained the global military, financial, or technological primacy documented in the Era I record.

Collapse and civil war

The old union entered the 2040s as the “normal country” described by Issa & Issa (2047) — still wealthy and armed, but no longer able to finance a global order. The fiscal contraction, the dissolution of the military-industrial base, and the loss of reserve-currency status had already transferred effective authority to state governments, which by the late 2040s were operating with de facto autonomy in healthcare, procurement, and regulation. The UN Economic Bulletin’s 2099 retrospective records that the federal regulatory apparatus “lost sustained federal attention” while states backstopped functions the federal government no longer funded.

The uprising years of the 2040s turned that divergence into open rupture. Several states separated from the union and declared independence; others formed regional compacts; the old union’s military, intelligence, and civil-service apparatus split among competing authorities. The Senate’s 71–29 ratification of the UN veto amendment in October 2052 was the old federal government’s last attempt to speak for the whole union. The conflicts that followed were a civil war among states — multi-sided, fought over the fiscal and administrative remains of the old republic, and settled only by the 2077 compact.

Formation

The NUSA was proclaimed in 2077 by the states that had reconstituted a common federal framework. Its founding compact was narrower than its predecessor’s: a coordination government for defense, currency, and interstate infrastructure rather than an apparatus for global power projection. The remainder of the 2070s was spent converting the settlement into functioning institutions. The new union inherited the rump federal civil service and NASA, but not the overseas basing network, the reserve-currency role, or the defense-industrial base that had sustained American primacy.

A reduced power

The NUSA never restored its predecessor’s position. Its space programme’s 2101 crewed Mars landing — the first American landing on Mars — was met with near-total indifference across the settled system, a measure of how fully the American century had receded. By the 2170s it was a background presence in the settlements’ records: Unit 08, the escaped general-cognition unit, was found non-functional beside a construction site in Dallas, Texas, in 2176, having lived unmarked among people for two decades. In December 2100 the NUSA joined Canada, Mexico, and the other North American successor governments in the Federation of Northern American Nations (FNAN), which took the continent’s single Council seat under the UN Charter of 2101.

[Archivist’s note: no single contemporary document in the archive covers the 2040s–2070s domestic sequence directly. This entry reconstructs it from the Issa & Issa retrospective (2047), the UN Economic Bulletin’s 2099 healthcare retrospective, and the Charter-era records of FNAN’s seating.]
